I lurves thems. After all, engineers need good problem solving skills dnt they?
I never really fancied those "regular" puzzles you see in newspapers... I prefer those that are slightly more open ended.

I've done quite a number of logic puzzles over the years... here are some of my faves, some are difficult and require a lot of thought... but you don't need anything other than a good logic to solve it. Try 'em!

I know it's been awhile since I've put anything up here so I'm guessing not a lot of ppl will notice this, but if you have any interesting puzzles to add... feel free to post it here!
===================================================================
You can't put a quart into a pint pot but....

Can you find a way to get exactly 4 liters of water with only a 3 liter bottle and a 5 liter bottle? This one is pretty easy.

The balancing act

You have 12 identical ball bearings. One of those ball bearings, however, is either slightly heavier or slightly lighter than the others. Using a balance scale (ie. a two pan balance scale) no more than 3 times , find the odd ball bearing. This one is tougher than it looks, but still relatively easy.

I'm blue da ba dee

So it's execution day in this medieval kingdom and there are 3 prisoners about to be lynched. However, it also happens to a public holiday and the king decides that he should show a certain degree of leniency. He decides to put the 3 men to a logic test and the first one with the right answer will be set free.

Here's what he did; he blindfolded each of the 3 men and painted all 3 of their foreheads with blue paint. He then said to them "I have put either yellow or blue paint on each of your foreheads. There is at least one blue forehead. When I remove your blindfolds, the first person to tell me the color on their forehead will be set free. Be warned however, as if you give me the wrong answer I will have you go through torture before your execution."

Their blindfolds were then removed and after a certain period of time one of the prisoners correctly yelled out "I'm blue". Keeping in mind that the prisoner has no way of seeing his forehead, what chain of logic did this man use to figure the color on his head?

Eureka?

There are 12 bags. In each of these 12 bags there are 12 solid gold bars which should weigh 1 kg each. One of the bags however, contains gold-alloy bars which are each 0.01 kg lighter than regular bars. Using a very precise electronic scale ONLY once, how do you determine which bag has the fake gold. (hint: you may remove the bars from the bags).

This is the toughest of the lot i think, I have more... but i'm too lazy to post them now. I'll provide solutions to those who request it. Enjoy!

I likes them acoustic guitar songs

After scouring the html source code at playlist.com(and by "scouring" i mean i hit ctrl-f and searched for "invite") i managed to find the link to making group playlists and created what's becoming my new fave playlist: acoustic/unplugged"
check it outs at www.playlist.com/kudut

Many thanks to the OC and tai for throwing songs in there...

I really like acoustic or unplugged versions of songs... it has a certain raw feeling to it that gives it some degree of authenticity. There's no sound engineering to make it perfect... you're not hearing separate tracks laid on top of each other to make something that would be almost impossible to replicate in real life. All you hear is pure talent.

It's like the artist is sitting there next to you singing and playing the guitar in an intimate setting (without large crowds making noise)... classy stuff. Has a better feel to it too if you decide whip out your own guitar and play along.

If any of you have some good acoustic tracks I could add... let me know. I say that's only true to a certain extent. For me, a true friend would stop you when they think you are doing something wrong instead of just letting you do as you please. Although the final decision is on your shoulders, it would be irresponsible of your friend to turn a blind eye when he/she sees a mistake on your part and just pretend everything is fine just so you stay happy and content with your decision.

It is because your friend gives a shit about you that he/she shows disagreement with your behavior.

I haven't been a good friend. OR they may not be very comfortable with ur ideas in which case you would need to further strengthen ur position or consider alternatives.

I noticed that i connect better with people who are easy to read, that is to say those who do not or are unable to hide their emotions. This is extremely hypocritical of me as I hide my emotions all the time (or at least i try to), but I find it easier to trust people who don't hide their emotions. The reason is simple, if you project ur sincere emotions around me, it shows that you have trust in me which in turn makes it easier for me to trust you. Hiding your emotions generally indicates distrust... in my case however, i hide my emotions because of the way i was brought up. As a child, appearing to be angry or crying excessively would be a sign of challenging my mother's authority and this would often lead to punishment.

So... how do you read people? Honestly, I'm no expert. However, I know the simplest thing you can do to improve is to pay more attention to the people around you. Look at them, how do they look like when they're happy? how do they look like when they're angry/sad/surprised? You can also examine their behavior when they tell the truth. This way, u establish a baseline for their personalities. Once you've established a baseline it's much more easier for you to read into them because you would notice almost immediately if there were any deviations.

I feel that it is important to at least have a basic level read on people... becoming a good "reader" makes you a better communicator 'cause you would be able to respond to the cues shown by the people around you. I know some people who have gotten themselves into very difficult situations just because they were completely oblivious or insensitive to their surroundings.

Let's learn to read.

Poker, poker, and more poker

We've been goin nuts with poker this past couple of weeks, cash games (both at home and at the casino) and a real casino tourny. The tournament was a great experience, I kinda understand how players at the WSOP feel now, the nervousness I felt really affected my ability to make good logical decisions. This made me realize that I'm not a "great" poker player and that there's so much more room for improvement in my game especially when it comes to dealing with nerves and playing against strangers. Playing online is so much more easier since no one can look at you and read your tells.
===================================================================
On a more philosophical note, when I was playing the tournament, I was making a lot of good decisions (or at least i felt like i was), but one bad decision led to me to being knocked out... I was thinking about it and I realized that's kinda like how life is rite? You make a lot of good decisions but one bad decision can disrupt everything.

For example, you can be a good person doing good, morally righteous things all your life... but if you decided one day to commit a cold blooded murder and you consequently get caught and sentenced to death, the only thing you'd be remembered as is a murderer. Or you could be in a relationship with someone and everything may seem to be going well... but one big fight may be all it takes to end it. Like poker, victory in life is not determined at the beginning when your first cards are dealt, it's determined when all the cards are played out.

All we can do is try to make the best decisions we can throughout life. Build a large "chip stack" shall I say, so that we can afford to make those small mistakes we would inevitably make as human beings. Then we keep moving on, and at the end of it all we'd be able to honestly say "that was a good game".

Leap of faith!

So... I woke up sunday morning and went for a drive with linh to des moines so that we could
jump out of a plane flying 9500 feet up in the air. Still breathing apparently(Isaac you owe me 10 bucks). Most awesome experience I have had to date... I can see why people get hooked to the sport, the feeling you get when you're moving more than 120 mph through the air is indescribable.

It's weird tho, I dunno if I was just tired or still hungover from the trip to minneapolis... but I didn't feel too nervous at all. Obviously the thought of jumping out of a plane for the first time is never an inviting one, but I thought I'd be a little more freaked out once my legs were dangling outside the plane. Quite honestly I've been more afraid getting onto a waterslide.

It wasn't til we jumped out of the plane though I realized what I was getting myself into... that brief 3 seconds where we fall before we catch air was insane... that's the stuff some of my nightmares are made of, just falling down like that. After that though everything I experienced was nothing short of amazing... You catch wind and although ur still falling pretty fast, ur not really "falling" so to speak.... you're just steadily moving downwards. The view was beyond words... I was quite literally within touching distance of clouds, stuff people only talk or dream about.

I wish i was a lil healthier tho... was feeling nauseous even before the jump thanks to a two day old hangover. Glad i didn't opt for pics/vids... I'd be stoning throughout (as evident in the few pictures that i appear in for linh's photoset). I'd definitely get pics tho if there is a next time.

I highly recommend going skydiving at least once guys... and get pics while you're at it. Trust me, it's the most thrilling experience I've ever had in my 23 years of life.

Summerrtimmeeeeeee~~

It's been awhile since my last post so I guess a new one is due... Summer classes arent supposed to be so stressful = =. Darned lab reports and oral presentations. I'm glad there's no finals tho....

anywayyyyyy.... tai created a summer group playlist on playlist.com . current members of the group include tai, oliver, alex diu and i. check it out here ==> Summer!
So basically, we're adding songs that we feel are "summer songs" or songs that remind us of summer. I woke up from my nap today and this sudden thought popped into my head. I noticed that some people have the "this is my blog and I'm gonna do whatever the fuck I want with it" approach to blogging. Although I agree that you can write about almost anything you want, the fact is that there are things that you should consider before writing.

1. The most obvious one, the blog's terms of use. If you haven't done so already, read or at least just scan through your blog platform's terms of use. For those of you using Blogger here are the links

Terms of Service

Content Policy

2. A more subtle point... responsibility for your message. Although when you write a blog you most likely have a certain target audience in your mind (your friends, family, colleagues etc) , the fact remains that your blog is placed on the world wide web. Unless it's a private blog, just about ANYONE can see it and with that comes a certain responsibility. <insert> You see (cue Bill Cosby), you have to be prepared to face the consequences of the message you put out.

For example, if you happened to be a pyro-geek of some sort, you may be inclined to put up a post on how to combine everyday household items to make them explode, just to show off to your friends. However, there's a danger in putting up something like that, someone somewhere in the world may abuse that sort of knowledge and ur blog post, though without ill-intent has turned into a reference for potential criminals/terrorists.

3. Aside from the obvious example i just gave, you would do well to always watch what you are writing about as it may offend some ppl who may stumble across your blog. Even if you don't really care about how ppl feel, it's still important to keep your message in check. There has been
many a case where people have gotten into trouble simply for blogging (like getting fired for bitching bout their bosses, or getting caught doing incriminating activities).

Now, i'm not saying your blog posts should please everyone, but you should always, ALWAYS be willing to handle the consequences of your message. Do that, and you won't have any regrets... happy blogging!</insert>

Tribute to the graduates!

So... grad night went pretty well this year, kudos to the grad night committee for doing a good job making sure our graduating seniors were well celebrated. His ultimate poker technique is to conjure a bad beat, and then somehow induce you to throw all your chips in when he actually hits something big... ask wooi hau! There has been alleged footage of him conducting sexual acts with other men (one of them looking like me) but i assure you, it is FAKE. He's usually the one who comes up with the seasonal catchphrase (eg. "niabeh" or "sanitation? i told you to say sanitarium!"). For some reason he enjoys bursting in my room (especially whenever he is high on something, be it weed, alcohol or some sugar) and lately he enjoys giving me bad poker advice on fulltilt XD. Nevertheless, sweeter than your average person. Making her laugh is hazardous as she tends to hit people around her, so please crack jokes with caution as i doubt being hit by a laughing maniac is covered in your health insurance =P (then again, that smile of hers may be worth all your troubles). Unfortunately, this young woman decided to break my heart by 1) not following through on her marriage proposal and 2) choosing to leave and further her studies in London ='(. How is it not possible for us to stay ahead after equalising and subsequently taking the lead? Bad beats man...

For those who don't play poker, a bad beat is defined as when a player who is most likely to win with his current cards gets defeated by lesser cards. Here's an example of a bad beat I experienced just today while playing a sit and go (a mini tournament styled poker match) , you don't have to know what's going on, just pay attention to the percentages.

So the cards circled in red, the pair of 9's, are the cards dealt to me (dealt face down of course). I was up against a single opponent who had the 6 and 5 of spades. The percentages represent the odds of each player winning the hand and as you can see, I'm in a great position to win(It's a lil blur, but I have a 79.07% chance of winning at this point). Guess what happens next?

This happens. My opponent miraculously hits both of his cards on the first 3 cards dealt giving him two pairs. Again, if you don't know what's going on... just look at the odds of my cards winning now(Now I'm a 27.07% underdog, almost a completely reversed situation). Needless to say, I lost this hand (for the technically inclined, I was short stacked and all in preflop) .

It's starting to seem like my whole life revolves around bad beats, and not just from poker. Here are some examples:

-I would be doing well for a class early on, but then I get overconfident and won't study as much (it really doesn't matter if I go for class or not, most of my learning comes when I study alone).
- The team I've supported since I was 5, Liverpool, hardly ever holds up when in a good position.
- Why am I graduating in Spring 2010? HELP University College and their crappy transfer credits
-Ever wonder how I stayed single for so long? The closest thing I've had to a serious romantic relationship broke down with one simple misunderstanding. Since then I've always been too cautious.

The funny thing is, I don't really believe in luck, I think everything comes down to probability and statistics (maybe I'm just in denial?). Statistically speaking, I am due for some righteous wins haha. With the streak I've been having in my 23 years of life though, I'm pretty much due for a miracle. When will it come? I hope very soon, cause it's gonna take something miraculous if Liverpool are gonna win the season this year.

Smile

Smile, though your heart is aching
Smile, even though it's breaking
When there are clouds in the sky, you'll get by
If you Smile, through your fears and sorrows
Smile, and maybe tomorrow
You'll see the sun shining through, for you

Light up your face with gladness
Hide every trace of sadness
Although a tear may be ever so near
That’s the time you must keep on trying
Smile, what’s the use of crying?
You’ll find that life is still worthwhile
If you’ll just Smile

This version of the song is sung by KokoKaina (real name Zee Avi), a Malaysian singing talent who gained popularity through YouTube. "did you just fart?") and suddenly this person picks up a defensive tone (eg. instead of answering the question, the person replies "why are u asking me?" ) . to me, it signifies that there is a certain amount of guilt within that person that's holding him/her back from answering the question directly (in my example, either he/she farted or he/she knows who did... lol). this may also be the case if the person answers almost too quickly, cause it signifies that the person was expecting to be asked that question (eg. "did you just.." "NO!")

Equity
A lot of casual poker players don't know this but there's actually guaranteed method to playing winning poker in the long run. this comes from the concept of equity. what this method generally does is it calculates the odds of winning a hand in poker and compares it with the amount of money you stand to win (a return) on ur investment(in the form of a bet). If your odds matches your return/investment ratio, then your investment is justified as in the long run, you will "break even". Accordingly, if your return/investment ratio is larger than your winning odds, over time, you will make a profit.

it's easy to see how this math concept can be applied in real life... just factor in ur risks and benefits to any economical decision you have to make and calculate the best option you would have in the long run. screw those business classes, play poker!

General Psychology

In poker, it's usually said that "weak is strong, strong is weak". What this means is when someone plays unusually strongly or tries to portray strength by staring directly at you, it's more likely that he is in a weak position and is playing strong to drive people away or trying to sell his bluff by looking directly in your eyes. similarly, if that person plays unusually weakly, it may be because he is in a position of strength and is trying to "milk" more money from everyone by making it cheap to play. A very common tell that someone has a strong hand is when he looks away from the dealt cards... this person is trying to portray weakness by trying to appear disinterested. This is just a couple of examples, the subject of psychology in poker is extremely large (books on poker will have entire chapters on them) so i'm just gonna stop here.

This type of thinking can easily be incorporated to ur daily lives... basically all you have to do is analyze the actions of people around you, read between the lines, and figure out their underlying motives...
===================================================================

I learned all this just from playing a card game with fairly simple rules.... aren't u interested now?

Anger Management

There's going to be a lot of times in your life when you're going to be put in the boiler and if you can't keep your cool, you will explode and cause harm physically or emotionally to either yourself or those around you. This is why I strongly believe that anger management skills is one of the most important skills that one needs to develop in life.

Everyone I know has their own way of controlling their anger (or so I hope). Some practice common methods such as taking deep breaths every time they're under stress, meditating, praying, listening to music or playing some music on an instrument, singing, dancing, working out etc. I know a few people who punch walls as a way to alleviate their anger... pretty destructive, but i say better a wall than someone's face (though i would probably recommend investing in a punching bag... for insurance purposes).

As for myself, I practice some of the common methods listed above, but I have to say the most effective way of handling my anger would be talking to myself... it sounds a little crazy, but honestly it really works for me. You'd prolly never catch me doing this, cause I only do it when I'm alone... eg in the shower (the leading reason i always take long showers, contrary to what you perverts think) or in my room and the conversation would just be in my head so u won't be able to hear the monologue... but yeah... I'm talking to myself. For example, if i'm pissed off at someone, I imagine myself telling that person off or arguing with that person (if i'm really pissed i might even imagine pounding that person to last week XD ) and the by the time i see that person again... I'm not mad anymore =D.

So... I wanna hear how all of you control your anger/manage your stress, however unorthodoxed it may seem to be. Even if it's just a common method, throw in the details of what you do... eg if you bake, what do you generally bake? (I may just drop by whenever ur angry for some cookies, om nom nom nom nom!) . Hopefully this'll help some people get ideas on how to better manage their anger.

Keselamatan kedatangans ke blog kekudutans!

Huahahahah~! Finally decided to give this blog shit a try since all you "cool kids" are doing it. I hate giving into trends, but sometimes change is necessary and you just gotta go with the flow rite? 'sides, i've always enjoyed freewriting... blogging would serve as an excellent channel for me to output all the random shit i might've cared to think about.

Another reason i started this is cause i seem to have an affinity towards written communication. Some of you may have noticed that i talk a lot more online than i do in person. I don't really know the reason why, but it seems easier for me to be more fluid with ideas when i can read what i say.

I suppose another reason i like writing is that i have the comfort of being able to erase/hit backspace at any time i'm saying something and this gives me a chance to reconsider the consequences of my words. I believe this is extremely important, if everyone took the opportunity to carefully consider what they say before they say it, so many things would go right in this world, misunderstandings can be avoided, feelings spared, relationships saved, wars avoided (wouldn't you agree?)

So there we go, my first blog post! a little more serious than i would've liked... but i think it's good! =D
First person to comment gets a poker buy in from me (maximum 2 bucks, haha). I was gonna say first person to discover this would get the buy in, but I honestly don't know when any of you would type "kudut" into your google search hence i have to announce this blog... oh, woe is me~
